Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi has surprisingly visited a military-owned football team, a visit that hints at a possible resumption of the Egyptian Premier League.

Tantawi heads the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which runs Egypt since the ousting of former president Hosni Mubarak in February.

He showed up as Gaish club, who compete in Egypt's top flight, were playing a friendly against Wadi Degla on Monday.

A short chat with the coaching staff took place during the break before Tantawi left.

"It was a very friendly visit," Gaish manager Farouk Gaafar told FilGoal.com on Tuesday. "We told him we wish that the League could be resumed."

All sporting activities have been suspended in Egypt since the start of the revolution on January 25th.

And with the huge political and security turmoil facing Egypt, it was unlikely to pay any attention to football.

"Egyptian authorities ponder restarting the league starting from the second week of April," a highly-informed source told FilGoal.com.

No Instructions

Still, the Egyptian Football Association said they didn't receive any instructions concerning the league.

"Nothing official yet," Competition's Committee chief Amer Hussein told FilGoal.com on Tuesday.

"But we will not be able to restart the league before the second week of April, because the Egyptian Olympic team will play Botswana on the ninth."

All Egyptian clubs called on the EFA to push for the resumption to avoid big financial losses.

It has been feared that match venues couldn't be properly secured as the police forces haven't fully returned to their positions in large parts of Egypt.

However, Zamalek's 1-0 victory over Kenya's Ulinzi Stars before some 20.000 fans in Cairo encouraged officials to reconsider.

The game went without troubles and was secured by army and police officials, with the help of some civilians from Zamalek's different fan groups.
