South Africa coach Pitso Mosimane did not pick skipper Aaron Mokoena in his squad for this month's Nations Cup qualifier against Egypt in Johannesburg.

The Portsmouth defender became the first South African footballer to reach 100 caps before the 2010 World Cup.

But lack of first-team football urged Mosimane to snub the veteran ahead of the anticipated match.

"We need all our experienced players for a big match like this but we also need to move forward," Mosimane said.

"I love and respect Aaron and have protected him when all the wolves were against him but please allow me to select the team.

"He has given us his best as the captain but this time he's not in the team I've selected."

SuperSport United defender Morgan Gould is likely to replace Mokoena alongside Tottenham's Bongani Khumalo.
