Katlego Mphela, who handed South Africa their first-ever win over Egypt on Saturday, was arrested for drunk driving in Johannesburg.

The 26-year-old was a local hero as he hit a last-gasp winner to give the Bafana Bafana a hard-fought 1-0 victory and dent Egypt's Nations Cup hopes.

But in less than a couple of days after the qualifier, Mphela was pulled over and detained when a police patrol found out that he was intoxicated while driving.

He was sobered up only after spending four hours at the police station.

"He's obviously disappointed about what transpired, but he also believed he was under the limit or he would not have taken the irresponsible action of driving when he didn't feel he was able to drive," said Glynn Binkin, Mphela's agent.

A court date has been scheduled for October.
