The Syrian football federation announced putting the domestic league on hold, amid the political unrest in the Arab nation.

Demonstrations are on the up against the rule of Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad, with fierce clashes between police and protestors taking place in the cities of Daraa and Latakia.

Despite the tense situation, another reason was stated for the postponement of the domestic competition.

The Syrian football ruling body said it made the decision "to allow national, Olympic, youth and junior teams to respond to other commitments."

A further statement will be made regarding the resumption of the league which saw 15 weeks played so far this season.
