Harras Hodoud failed to reach the African Confederation Cup group stage for the first time in four years after losing to DR Congo’s Motema Pembe on penalties.

The Alexandrians, who had a slender 2-1 lead from the first leg, were beaten by the same scoreline in Kinshasa on Sunday, leading to a 4-3 shootout defeat.

The home side were in front with two goals from striker Tresor Matondo, but Hodoud grabbed the aggregate equalizer through defender Ahmed Safi.

In the shootout, Egypt striker Ahmed Hassan Mekki and Senegalese Pape Latyr N’Diaye missed for Tarek Al-Ashri’s side to send the Congolese outfit through.

Hodoud join league rivals Ismaili out of the competition as Ahli become the only Egyptian club competing on the continental stage.

The Egyptian champions host Zambian counterparts ZESCO United later on Sunday.
