CAF Champions League holders Mazembe are set to appeal against the decision to disqualify them from this year’s competition.

The DR Congo champions were expelled by CAF on Saturday for fielding an ineligible player in their last 32 clash with Tanzania’s Simba Sports.

"We're very surprised to see Mazembe has been disqualified, we know our administration is very clean," club owner Moise Katumbi said.

The decision was made by the African football ruling body after Simba protested against the participation of Janvier Besala Bokungu, claiming the defender was under contract with former club Esperance.

"Janvier properly revoked his contract with Esperance and Mazembe have no problem with the player or his former club. He was acquired after a mutual agreement," Mazembe general manager Frederic Kitengie told reporters.

Should their appeal be accepted, Mazembe will be automatically moved to quarter-finals Group A, along with Ahli, Esperance and Mouloudia Alger.
