It was a day when security was hardly a concern in Egypt, yet a shameful incident put the Arab Contractors- Zamalek league encounter to an early end in November 2000.

Mid-table Contractors were one-nil up at half time, thanks to a penalty from Ali Ashour just before the interval.

However, Ashour’s goal was never important come the end of the season.

While he was on his way to the dressing room at half time, referee Reda Al-Beltagi was sniped with a stone that left him with a cut eyebrow and two stiches to deal with the wound.

Al-Beltagi was forced to call the game off, sparking a debate over who should claim the points of the game played at Green Mountain; Contractors’ home ground.

While the public were almost certain that the stone came from the Zamalek stands, the Cairo club argued that the home team should be blamed for the chaotic incident.

On the other hand, Contractors had a point insisting that no way their minority fans would have done it with the team winning, thus asking to be automatically considered victors.

The Egyptian FA subsequently came to the decision of replaying the match in full a month later, and this time Zamalek coasted to a 2-0 victory before eventually winning the title in 2000-2001.

Hopefully, this weekend's fixture will go in peace even though both teams are in dire need for the three points.
