The Hammers were officially demoted upon losing at Wigan Athletic last weekend, leaving them with nothing but pride to play for when Sunderland go to Upton Park Sunday.
A couple of days ahead of the game, Elmo said: "West Ham have a lot of good players, they beat us here in the Carling Cup.
"However, I am not surprised they have gone down because there are a lot of strong teams in the Premier League.
"They are down now, but it will still be tough for us on Sunday.
"We want to finish the season with a win. It is the last game and we want to finish on a high.
"In the last two away games we have played well and we can look forward to Sunday after winning at Bolton two weeks ago."
Sunderland lie 14th in the Premier League table with 44 points, five ahead of the relegation zone.
