Abdelhak Benchikha has stepped down as the manager of Algeria after less than one year in charge, following a thumping 4-0 defeat in Morocco on Saturday.

The defeat left the 2010 World Cup finalists bottom of their CAN 2012 qualifying group with four points from as many games.

Benchikha, who replaced Rabah Saadane last September, announced his resignation at a press conference on Sunday.

The former Club African coach led Algeria in just two games before the Morocco defeat, one of which was a 1-0 victory over the Atlas Lions in March.
